Lockjaw, Slobbering Teleporter

I didn't know this about myself before, but I'm down to paint flapping jowels all day.

This guy was the first card I tackled of this new Marvel set, and set the bar high for how wacky and fun the illustrations could be. I was originally worried these cards would need to feel more serious, but I was able to carry a lot of the TMNT energy through to them!

I struggled at first lighting his body; trying to use the tube of blue light surrounding him; but it resulted in something that felt very flat, and with little clarity. So I treated the blue as though it was coming entirely from behind, and added a warm light that's hitting lockjaw head-on. I very rarely chose this centralised lighting, but it was perfect to emphasise the contours of his face; each fold of skin resulting in a strong light to dark gradient. I've ended up really loving this guy.

Big thanks to my AD Matt Cavotta!
